[ARCHIVED] Barbara Jacob named New Berlin Citizen of the Year

Press-Release-Citizen of the Year Announcement

Mayor Dave Ament is happy to announce Barbara Jacob as the recipient of the 2020 New Berlin Citizen of the Year Award.  Barb has provided dedicated service to the New Berlin Food Pantry for over a decade and currently serves as the Pantry’s Assistant Director.

Barb started out at the Food Pantry assisting with food distribution; she later added the solicitation and distribution of school supplies in the Fall.  She now annually organizes Thanksgiving bags which include all the fixings for a Thanksgiving dinner including the turkey!  She pulls together Christmas baking bags to ensure that those in need can do some Christmas baking and initiated a gift card giving campaign for her clients as well.

Barb is also responsible for recruiting and scheduling the more than two dozen Pantry volunteers. Barb has built relationships with area businesses and local donors to keep the Pantry’s shelves full. She also maintains all the required weekly reports that need to be submitted to Feeding America.

As Assistant Director of the New Berlin Food Pantry, Barb was also responsible for adjusting procedures during the Covid-19 pandemic.  She successfully adopted new protocols while continuing to serve this community uninterrupted.

Barb and her husband Ed, who volunteers at the Pantry as well, have lived in New Berlin for over 30 years along with their two children. The family has been active members of the Eisenhower community and are members of St. Elizabeth Anne Seton. Barb is not only passionate about keeping the community fed but she has also been a tireless volunteer for Parkinson’s Disease. She was very active in the annual “Moving Forward” event with Froedtert Hospital and spent many hours soliciting for and then assembling raffle baskets. Those efforts raised thousands of dollars over a seven year period.

The Mayor will present the award on Monday, October 26th at 2 pm at New Berlin’s Community Center, located at 14750 W. Cleveland Avenue.  The presentation will take place in the Cleveland Room. Individuals or groups are encouraged to attend in support of this outstanding New Berlin resident who has given tirelessly to the community.
