Posted on: March 31, 2020[ARCHIVED] BURGHARDT SPORTING GOODS MOVING HEADQUARTERS TO NEW BERLIN

On behalf of myself, Common Council President Ken Harenda, all of your Aldermen on the Common Council and the entire City staff we are extremely pleased to announce that Burghardt Sporting Goods, a local family-based sporting goods company, will be moving their headquarters to New Berlin. Burghardt has purchased the former Walmart building located at 15333 W. National Avenue. The new location will utilize approximately 80,000 square feet of the existing building and house sales, production, warehousing, screen printing and embroidery services. They expect to employ about 80 people at this location.
Further, there is a purchase agreement dated February 28, 2020 between the City of New Berlin and the Burghardtia, LLC for the City to purchase approximately 25,000 square feet of the building and adjacent lands. The city intends to use the building space for recreational activities. The city also anticipates a future building addition to the north side of the building to provide for additional recreational facilities to meet the needs of the residents of the City of New Berlin. Burghardts and the city are very excited about this partnership!
Burghardts has applied for re-occupancy permit and submitted a rezoning and land division applications. A public hearing for the rezoning will be held during the April 13th Plan Commission meeting with action expected at the May 4th meeting. Review and action on the land division is also expected at the May 4th meeting. The Planned Unit Development overlay will provide for the additional uses in the B-1 Zoning District as well as further the City’s vision for redevelopment efforts in this area. Please visit the City’s website to learn more at www.newberlin.org.
About Burghardts: The company was originally founded in 1881 as a stationary and book store, in downtown Milwaukee. Around the turn of the century, the business shifted towards team sports and sporting goods. Today, the company is still family owned, and being run by the fifth generation of the Burghardt family. Because of this, it is recognized as one of the oldest family owned and operated sporting goods stores in the nation.
