Posted on: March 16, 2020[ARCHIVED] COVID-19 Concerns and the April 7 Spring Election/Presidential Preference Primary
With the growing concern regarding the coronavirus in the State of Wisconsin, the City Clerk’s Office would like to make it known that there are alternative ways of voting in the April 7, 2020 Election beyond going to the polls between 7AM-8PM.Our primary concern is protecting the voters of the City of New Berlin and our election staff. The safety and health of our residents, staff and election workers are of the utmost importance to the City of New Berlin. We are consistently monitoring recommendations from the CDC, WEC, and Waukesha County and are doing everything we can to implement those into the polling locations. With that, we are taking the following precautions:
The Clerk’s Office has purchased an abundance of hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes for all polling locations.
Election Staff will be encouraged to wipe down all surfaces & equipment as time allows.
All election staff will have their own pen and they are not permitted to share with other staff nor voters.
Voters are encouraged to bring their own pen to lessen the amount of items with multiple persons touching them.
Election Inspectors are encouraged to call in sick if they are not feeling well on Election Day – please understand that this may cause a shortage in staffing at the polling locations and therefore could cause longer lines at the polls. The Clerk’s Office is doing everything we can to plan for this contingency and working to have as many staff members “on-call” as possible, please be patient with the Election Inspectors while at the polls. To avoid long wait times – voters are encouraged to vote utilizing a mailed absentee ballot.
Voters are encouraged to vote via an absentee ballot (by mail) if they have a compromised immune system or if they are feeling ill themselves. Information on absentee voting:
Registered voters may request an absentee ballot via the myvote.wi.gov site – you may request that the ballot is mailed to your home. Further instructions can be found by clicking here. Once received, fill out your ballot and ensure that the certificate on the front of the return envelope is COMPLETELY filled out. This would include:

The Deadline (5:00 p.m.) for regular and overseas electors to request absentee ballots by mail is Thursday, April 2nd. However, we urge voters not to wait, due to possible delays in mail delivery.
Deadline (5:00 p.m.) for indefinitely confined electors and military electors, not on active duty or away from their residence, to request absentee ballots by mail (online, email or fax) for the Presidential Preference Primary and Spring Election is Friday, April 3rd.
Your absentee ballot must be received in the Clerk’s Office by 8 p.m. on Election Day.
Again, we urges voters to request and return ballots as soon as possible.
In-Person Absentee Voting will be available per usual Monday-Friday, March 16 - April 3rd from 8AM-4:30PM at New Berlin City Hall, 3805 S Casper Drive. Extended hours until 5PM will be offered on April 2nd & 3rd. The same precautions will be taken in the Clerk’s Office as they will be at the polls on Election Day. Again, it is encouraged for voters to bring their own pens.
As the City Clerk’s Office continues to gain information from the Wisconsin Election Commission, CDC, Waukesha County and the City’s own Emergency Management Department, we will keep the public informed.
The integrity of all elections and the health and safety of our voters and staff have always been and will continue to be of the utmost importance to the City of New Berlin.
