Employment

There are two ways to become a police officer in New Berlin, go through the "Consortium Process" or the "Lateral Transfer Process."  The two are detailed below:

Consortium Process

The New Berlin Police Department has teamed up with Elm Grove, Brookfield and Pewaukee to form the Waukesha County Municipal Law Enforcement Recruitment Association (WCMLERA.)  The WCMLERA advertises when they are accepting applications, usually every spring and fall, and oversees the application and testing process for all four departments.  There is a $15-$20 testing fee and applications can be picked up at any one of the four departments.  The qualifications to be a police officer vary from department to department.  As far as education requirements for New Berlin, we require at least an Associate in Applied Science degree in Police Science or Criminal Justice and/or completion of 61 credits towards a four year degree program in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement or related field.  After the WCMLERA process, additional processing will be required by the New Berlin Police and Fire Commission.

Lateral Transfer Process

If you are currently a certified police officer in Wisconsin and have met the education requirement listed above, you may apply to New Berlin under the Lateral Transfer Process.  Applicants who apply as a lateral transfer must have at least two years of full time experience as a police officer with another agency.  The other steps in the process are as follows:

  • Interested officers should submit their names and addresses to the Chief's office.
  • An application with then be sent out, along with the date the application is due.
  • The completed application should be returned to the Chief of Police, along with a $300 non-refundable check made payable to the "City of New Berlin."
  • The New Berlin Police and Fire Commission with require further processing.
  • Applicants may be dropped during any phase of the hiring process.
  • Officers hired may receive salary commensurate with prior years of service and vacation after one year commensurate with prior years of service.
  • Prior seniority does not transfer to the New Berlin Police Department.
  • All uniforms and equipment will be provided at city expense.
  • All officers will have to complete field training.
  • All officers will be on probation for 18 months.

Questions should be addressed to Chief Joseph Rieder
